Hackers breach federal auditor’s computer system, steal credit card information
The federal auditor says hackers stole his information and stole credit card numbers from a high-profile account at the National Association of Realtors.
The hack happened Wednesday morning, said Brian O’Neil, chief financial officer of the Association of National Realtor, which represents the nation’s big-ticket home and commercial real estate agents.
The hackers stole data and credit card details from a system that was set up for auditing and security.
They then went to a second system and accessed the credit card data and the credit report information of some members, O’Neill said.
He said the thieves also stole information about potential future audits, including a breakdown of the association’s membership.
O’Neil said the association is investigating the hack and is taking steps to protect its financial information.
The National Association for Real Estate Boards of Directors issued a statement Wednesday night saying it is investigating what happened and cooperating with federal authorities.
